Syllabus for Music Class 2017/2018
Lenart Regional Gifted Center
Music - Instructor Mr. Coulter
Class
General Music Grades 3rd-4th
The following will be taught in general music at Lenart:
Recorder
All students will continue to learn how to play the recorder. Each student should have their own recorder.
Music Theory
Music symbol and note recognition (Staff, Treble Clef, Bass Clef, Notes, Time Signatures, Key signatures, Note Values, Rest Values, Ledger lines, Slur, Tie, Flat ,Sharp, Accidentals.) Major Scales and Chord Structures
Piano
Third and fourth grade will spend one quarter working in the piano lab.
Appreciation
Genres - Classical, Jazz, Blues, Gospel, R&B, Hip Hop, Salsa, Mariachi, Rock
Instruments
Students will learn about the 4 instruments groups: Strings, Woodwind, Brass, Percussion
Extra Curricular
Marching Band, concert band, Jazz band, String Ensembles
Instructional Materials
Each student must have a pencil, a spiral note book and folder (to keep graded assignments and handouts). Manuscript Paper. Recorder.
Field Trips
Each classroom will go on a music field trip. The trips are directly related to the music curriculum. It is highly recommended that each student attend the trips. There will be assignments and possibly a test. If the student does not attend the trip there will be assignment on the subject matter of the trip. If there are financial issues concerning the trip please let me or the office know about your concerns.

Additional information regarding Grading and evaluations
1. Students are expected to come to class prepared to work. Please have pencil, paper and a folder and manuscript paper at all times. Walking into class eating or drinking or chewing will result in a reduction of your participation grade.
2. Students are expected to conduct themselves in a respectable manner, with complete courtesy, integrity and honesty at all times. Please refer to the Uniform Discipline Code regarding acts of misconduct.
Homework policy 3rd & 4th Grade. Homework is due the next class session unless otherwise indicated. Late assignments will be given one more class session which is then one week after the assignment was given. After that it will not be accepted.
The following classroom rules must be adhered to at all times.
1. When the teacher is talking, no one else is talking.
2. When another student is talking to Mr. Coulter or addressing the class, no one else is talking.
3. If you have something to say please raise your hand and wait for the teacher to call your name.
4. Please keep your hands, feet and all objects to yourself.
Extra Credit
1. Students can receive extra credit if he or she participates in a musical performance that is not associated with Chicago Public Schools. The student must inform Mr. Coulter at least 2 weeks prior to the performance. If Mr.Coulter cannot attend the student must bring proof of their performance back to school: (Program with student’s name or a note from the director, conductor, coordinator, etc.., of the group.)Remember, notice must be given 2 weeks prior to the performance.
2. Listen to WHPK – Mr. Coulter is a D.J. at WHPK 88.5 FM alternating Saturdays from 12 noon to 2pm or other Jazz format shows on WHPK. Listen to the show. Write the name of 3 songs with the artist. Turn in the assignment on the following Monday. You can call the station and ask for the titles of the songs and artist during that time. Station #773-702-8424. If you can not pick up the station on the radio it streams live at www.whpk.org. You can do this twice in a marking period. Remember, students can also listen to other Jazz format shows on whpk to get extra credit. Please write the day and time that you listen to WHPK.
